SpartansSpeak: “True Democracy at Work”
One Reporter’s Take on the BLM Movement
“History is meant to teach and allow us to grow,” but when those who fail to listen or understand those lessons hold onto their prejudices and hateful ideas, lives are lost. So believes Junior Sabrina Morata who photographed and wrote this poignant and personal photo-essay depicting peaceful moments in the Black Lives Matter Movement, captured in Miami. We believe this powerful piece is indicative of how many people feel and is worthy of being published as an editorial in SpartansSpeak.

Truth is always an ideal for which to strive. Dissembling leads to the strung-along effects of harm.
I do think that we’re all driven by biases and prejudices, but unfortunately, we’re not all open to change. It is a presentation like this that gives me hope that the youth will save us from a broken system founded upon white supremacy by offering a fresh, powerful position from which to gain new information, a new perspective. As you say, just by us being a witness should be enough to change.
Thank you for your courage to write this.
